SRINAGAR: Three new judges of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court will be sworn in on Tuesday, taking the working bench strength of the state’s highest judicial court to 12 but still short of the full 17.
The three new judges— Advocate SK Shukla, former District and Sessions Judge MK Hanjura and incumbent District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Gupta—will be administered their oath by Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed at a function at the high court at about 10:30am.
Earlier this month, President of India Pranab Mukherjee issued the warrants of appointment for the three judges, following which a notification was issued by the Indian Ministry of Law and Justice.
“In exercise of powers conferred by Section 95 of the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir, the President is pleased to appoint Sanjeev Kumar Shukla, Mahraj Krishan Hanjura and Sanjay Kumar Gupta to be Judges of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, with effect from the date they assume charge of their respective offices,” read the notification (No. K 13021/01/2016-US.II) issued by Rajinder Kashyap, Joint Secretary of Indian Ministry of Law and Justice.
MK Hanjura belongs to Chadoora area of district Budgam. He did LLB (Hons) in 1979 and practised in the district court at Budgam up to the date of his appointment as Munsiff on January 19, 1987.
He was promoted as Sub-Judge in November 1996 and appointed as District and Sessions Judge in March 2003.
After appointment as District and Sessions Judge, MK Hanjura was posted as Special Judge, anti-corruption, Jammu.
SK Shukla, a resident of village Nagrota Prehta of Basohli tehsil, did LLB from Jammu University in 1988. Sanjay Gupta did LLB from Jammu University and was selected as direct recruit in the higher judicial service as District and Sessions Judge in 2004.
The trio figured in the list of judges recommended by a collegium of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court headed by the Chief Justice in February 2016. The list included four advocates— Javed Kawoosa, MS Latif, Nasir Hussain Shah, Muhammad Yousuf Bhat— from Kashmir region and Advocates GS Thakur, RK Gupta and SK Shukla from Jammu, besides serving judicial officer Sanjay Gupta and former judicial officers MK Hanjura and Kaneez Fatima.
