SRINAGAR: To improve street lighting, PDD and SMC are installing 157 high mast led lights in the Kashmir valley at the cost of 5.5 cr rupees. The agencies will also repair defunct lights in Srinagar.
Different agencies – Housing Department (HD), Power development Department (PDD), Tourism, Roads and Building Department (R&B) and SMC – install street lights in Srinagar.
“Already we have installed high mast LED lights at various places in the city like Batamaloo, Police Control Room, Gupkar, Nishat, Brain, and Fore Shore Road.
Officials say that the lights will be installed at the height of 16-20 meters which will illuminate the streets better and can be replaced with four sodium vapor lights.
Hashmat Qazi, superintend engineer of Power Development Department (PDD), said, “Out of 157, 120 are 16 and 18 meters high and others are 20 meter high. It is for the first time that we are installing 20 meter high mast lights”.
PDD have to cover all main chowks of the valley with these lights. On the other side, Srinagar Municipal Corporation has to look after Srinagar city’s smaller lanes.
“We have a target to install 5000 street light in the Srinagar city in which we have already installed 2000 street lights. It is all sought with PDD. They have their own jurisdiction and we have our own. We have to cover small lanes, and main roads will be covered by PDD,” said Srinagar Municipal Corporation Commissioner, Shafkat Khan.
