Sopore: Police have arrested more than 20 students in Sopore town and nearby areas in night raids in the past couple of days. The students have been arrested on charges of stone-pelting and taking part in street protests. Police have kept the students at Sopore police station for questioning. Most of the arrested students are from the government degree college and the boys’ higher secondary school in Sopore.
Farooq Ahmad, whose son was picked up Friday night from Nowpora village, told Kashmir Reader that his son is a Class 12 student at the boys’ higher secondary school in Sopore. “Police came to our home at midnight and took away my son. They told us my son would be released in the morning but they have not released him. They are now saying that he is involved in stone-pelting,” Farooq told Kashmir Reader.
“If they don’t release him, his career will be ruined,” the worried father said.
Some parents of the arrested students went to the Sopore police station on Saturday to meet police officers, but their children have not been released yet.
When contacted, Sopore Superintendent of Police Harmeet Singh said that the Station House Officer of Sopore should be asked for information on this matter. Singh confirmed that more than 20 students have been arrested for questioning and will be released after due investigation.
