KUPWARA: Langate legislator Sheikh Abdul Rasheed was taken into custody along with his supporters Friday as he led a march against Thursday’s civilian killing in Panzgam.
A statement issued by Rahseed’s Awami Ittehad Party said that despite strict restrictions, protestors marched from Deputy Commissioner Kupwara’s office, chanting anti-army slogans and demanding arrest of the major responsible for killing of Mohammad Yousuf.
Police and CRPF stopped the protestors near Kupwara market, the statement said, adding that police used force to foil the march and arrested Rasheed along with some activists and lodged them in Police Station Kupwara.
“In broad day light and in presence of police and media persons an army major ordered to fire bullet on head of Mohammad Yousuf and then shamelessly army jawans celebrated his murder. Police could do nothing to save a precious life and the army in fact abused shamelessly even the senior superintendent of police present there,” Rasheed said while leading the protest.
He added that “Police force should know its worth”, by seeing the treatment meted out to SSP Kupwara at the hands of army men.
He also said that just lodging an FIR doesn’t carry any meaning, unless the “culprits in uniform” involved in “murder” are not arrested and put behind bars.
