Srinagar: Shopkeepers pulled down their shutters and people ran for their lives as clashes between protesting students and government forces escalated and spread to all parts of Lal Chowk in Srinagar on Monday.
Clashes erupted on MA road, Residency Road and surrounding areas after many students were arrested and several sustained injuries during intense clashes, sources said.
“I have not seen such an intense tear smoke shelling in and around Lal Chowk,” said a street vender while winding up his shop.
The protesting students were angry that many of their fellows were arrested and beaten up by the men in uniform.
According to witnesses there was chaos in the civil lines area of Srinagar as stones were pelted by protesting students and tear smoke canisters were fired by government forces.
The clashes erupted after SP Higher Secondary School and Women’s College students hit the busy MA road to protest against alleged highhandedness of forces.
