Kangan: Family members of Sheikh Azhar-ul-Islam – sentenced to seven years imprisonment by a court in Delhi on charges of links with ISIS – have appealed governments in the state and New Delhi to reconsider the case.
Hailing from Preng Kangan in Ganderbal district, the family said they were expecting Azhar’s release, but came to know about his conviction through media reports.
“My brother has been convicted for a crime which he never did,” Sheikh Zubair Ahmad, Azhar’s brother said. “Last time we met him at Tihar Jail, he was quite well and he was unaware about his fate”.
The family said that Azhar was innocent and had gone to UAE to support his family. He was never affiliated with any militant organisation, they maintained.
“We know he (Azhar) is innocent and is not involved in any militant activity. We appeal PM Narendra Modi, CM Mehbooba Mufti and president of India Pranab Mukherjee to take measures to reconsider the case,” a relative of Azhar said.
Azhar-ul-Islam, 24, was arrested from IGI Airport Delhi in January last year. JK police had said that there was “nothing adverse” against Azhar in police records.
