Shopian: Unidentified gunmen looted the Jammu Kashmir Bank at Harmain village in district Shopian on Wednesday. Four armed, masked men reportedly entered the bank and looted cash, seven mobile phones of employees, and a personal bag of a cashier. The bank management refused to share details of the amount looted from the bank.
After the bank robbery, locals of the village protested and pelted government troops with stones for maligning the image of militants as bank robbers. The troops retaliated by firing teargas shells at the villagers.
“We saw four masked men who were in army uniform and raincoats. They also abused the people who were present at the spot,” a villager said. “It seems fishy that the authorities have not revealed the amount looted from the bank.”
According to bank officials, police came to the bank after the robbery was reported and picked up a bank officer for investigation.
Shopian Additional Superintendent of Police Ifroz Ahmad told Kashmir Reader that the police have not yet received details from bank authorities. “When they will give us details of how much money was looted from the bank, we will inform you,” he said.
He added that an FIR has been lodged and denied that police picked up any bank officer for investigation.
