Gund: Residents of villages in Gund area in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have complained that drinking water supplied to their homes was contaminated and residents ran an increased risk of water-borne diseases. A group of residents from Gund area said that water pipes ran muddy water. “Now the mud is clearly visible in water. The problem has worsened from the last week” said a villager. He said that problem worsened during the rains.
Villagers alleged that PHE department was forcing them to drink contaminated water because the treatment plant was non-functional and the water tanks were in bad shape. “There is no regular cleaning of the tank. Most of the water tanks are full of mud, leaves and insects,” said Sheikh Asif, a resident of Gund. Despite repeated attempts, no official was available for comment.
