Srinagar: In less than a four-month span, 675 FIRs have been registered at police stations in Srinagar, 138 of them for stone-pelting. The police stations of Parimpora, Safakadal, and Sadder have registered the highest number of FIRs and Safakadal, Nowhatta and MR Gunj police stations have registered almost 50% of the FIRs related to stone-pelting.
The office of the Chief Judicial Magistrate lower court Srinagar records that from January 5 to April 15 this year, 675 FIRs pertaining to stone-pelting, illegal construction, robbery, fraud and embezzlement, maintenance (alimony), domestic violence, drug peddling, and other cases have been registered at police stations in Srinagar.
There are a total of 29 police stations in Srinagar, of which the Railway Police station and the Tourist Police station have not registered any FIR at the lower court in these four months.
Between January 5 and April 15, Parimpora police station registered 78 FIRs, Safakadal station registered 70 FIRs, and Sadder station registered 64 FIRs. In all stations, 138 FIRs have been registered for stone-pelting incidents with Safakadal, Nowhatta and MR Gunj stations registering 50% of these cases.
More than half of all the FIRs related to stone-pelting incidents have been registered against juveniles. Of these, 80% of the accused juveniles have been brought before the CJM’s court.
The other FIRs include 58 cases of illegal construction, 9 cases of domestic violence, 46 cases of maintenance (alimony), 48 cases of theft / robbery, 23 cases of drug peddling, 12 cases of fraud, 6 cases of sexual assault, 12 cases of forgery, 19 cases of vandalism, 11 cases of arson, 2 cases of public intoxication, and a few other minor cases.
