Srinagar: A student of the women’s college at Nawa Kadal in Srinagar was critically injured when she was hit on the head by a stone allegedly thrown by a CRPF trooper.
Iqra Sidiq, B.Com first-year student, was part of a student protest against the police action on students in Pulwama Degree College on Friday.
According to doctors at SMHS Hospital, Iqra’s skull has been broken and her brain has suffered injury. She lies subconscious in the Critical Care emergency ward of the hospital.
According to the students who were present at the hospital, a peaceful procession taken out by girl students was intercepted by police at Eidgah Chowk. The police allowed the students to walk ahead but a stone was thrown from a bunker of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) that hit Iqra in head.
“We were walking peacefully until police came and asked us to continue peacefully as we were just girls in the procession. Suddenly a big stone came from the top of the CRPF camp which hit her on the head,” a student said.
Javid Ahmad, a relative of the injured girl, said that there were only a few girls protesting on the street and there was no need of using force on them.
“We saw the procession. It was small and there were just girls in it. How can the government troops use force on them? What can we do now, she is critical,” Ahmad said.
Medical Superintendent of SMHS Dr Nazir Chowdhary said that seven injured youth were admitted to the hospital on Monday, of whom three have been injured by pellets, two of them in the eyes and one of them in the back. One youth has been injured by a teargas shell in his foot and three more have received stone injuries, which includes the girl from the Nawakadal women’s college whose skull has been damaged.
