Shopian: Three persons were injured, one of them with a bullet, in clashes with government forces on Sunday after militants managed to break the cordon laid by government forces with the help of people in Heff Shirmal village of Shopian.
The man injured by a bullet was identified by villagers as Faizan Ahmad Shah of Shirmal village. He was hit with a bullet in his shoulder and was rushed to district hospital Pulwama. Police said his condition was stable. The medical superintendent of the hospital confirmed that the boy had a bullet injury and said he had been referred to SKIMS Soura for specialised treatment.
Eyewitnesses said that villagers threw stones on the vehicles of troops, who retaliated by firing tear smoke shells and bullets in the air. “Youth came out of their houses and threw stones on the troops,” said the villagers at Heff. “After the troops left the village, they came under stone-pelting near Achan village. In retaliation, they opened fire, injuring Faizan,” said a villager.
A police handout said that troops, acting on specific information of presence of militants in village Heff of Shopian, began a cordon and search operation in the village. While the cordon was being laid, police said, “the militants fired upon the security forces and taking advantage of the mob they managed to escape”. The statement added that police later learnt that “one person has received a bullet injury in his shoulder”. Police have taken up investigation in the incident, the statement said.
