Srinagar: Opposition National Conference (NC) president Dr Farooq Abdullah had taken a lead of over 10 thousand votes over his nearest rival Nazir Khan of the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in the counting of by-polls to Srinagar-Budgam parliamentary constituency on Saturday.
The final results are expected by afternoon and the early trends show that Abdullah will emerge victorious. Abdullah had secured 30333 votes while Khan had got 20221 votes when reports last came in.
The counting for the seat, spread over three districts with a total of 15 assembly constituencies, started at 8 am. The by-poll for the seat was conducted on April 9 and the re-poll at some polling stations held on April 13 after the segment witnessed large scale protests.
The election was bloodiest in the electoral history of Kashmir which witnessed eight civilian killings in forces’ actions apart from injuries to over 300 people, including forces personnel.
