Srinagar: The police have arrested five persons on charges of heckling and assaulting a group of CRPF troopers during by poll for Srinagar parliamentary seat on Sunday
The action against the accused was taken after a video showing a group of youth heckling the troopers surfaced on social media networks.
The police had registered an FIR after CRPF filed a complaint with Chadoora police station. As many as 11 persons have been identified.
“We are still investigating the incident and more arrests may follow,” a police official said.
“So far five youth involved in the case have been identified while main accused are yet to be arrested,” the police official told Kashmir Reader.
The accused, according to sources, belong to Kralpora area of Budgam district.
Director General of Police (DGP) Shesh Paul Vaid said the youth involved in the assault will be dealt as per law.
The DGP commended the CRPF men for “showing restraint during the incident”, adding, “any armed force in the world would have retaliated with force”.
“It would have led to death of those ruffians,” he said.
The video created uproar in India, with cricketer Gautam Gambhir calling, in a series of tweets, for “killing at least 100 jihadi lives for every slap on my army jawan”.
“For every slap on my army’s Jawan lay down at least a 100 jihadi lives. Whoever wants Azadi LEAVE NOW! Kashmir is ours. #kashmirbelongs2us” the cricketer wrote on micro-blogging site Twitter.
“Anti-Indians hav forgotten dat our flag also stands 4: saffron – fire of our anger, white – shroud for jihadis, green – hatred 4 terror,” Gambhir wrote in the second tweet.
Joining Gambhir, cricketer Virendra Sehwag wrote, “This is unacceptable! Can’t do this to our CRPF Jawaans. This rot has to stop. Badtameezi ki hadd hai.”
Meanwhile, according to Vaid, an FIR has also been lodged in case of another incident filmed on a mobile phone showing government forces’ personnel shooting a protester from a very close range near a polling station.
“A case has been registered in connection with that incident also. It is a matter of investigation and action will be taken against whoever is found guilty,” DGP Vaid said.
