Srinagar: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) data shared with Parliament Tuesday suggest that the atmosphere was not “conducive” for Srinagar by-poll.
Following the very poor turnout for Srinagar by-poll, it was revealed that the Election Commission had reportedly ignored the MHA’s advice on postponing the election, media reports said.
The Valley has been simmering since the beginning of the year, with a spike in the number of militant attacks and incidents of stone pelting protests against government forces during anti-militant operations.
According to MHA, in the first three months, Kashmir witnessed 25 gunfights between government forces and militants, in which 33 militants were killed. Ten forces personnel were also killed in anti-militant operations while 20 militants were apprehended.
