Sonamarg: The 90-kilometer long Srinagar-Sonamarg road on the strategic highway to Ladakh will be thrown open for traffic on Tuesday, officials said. The highway was blocked for around five months due to heavy snowfall.
Deputy commissioner Ganderbal Tariq Hussain Ganai along with a team of officers visited Sonamarg tourist resort on Sunday to take stock of the situation and the road condition. He was informed that the Srinagar-Sonamarg-road will be opened for light vehicular traffic on April 4 (Tuesday) if weather remains fair.
The traffic on the stretch will be operated under strict observation to avoid any inconvenience,” officials said.
The famous health resort of Sonamarg remains cut off due to heavy accumulation of snow on a 10-kilometer stretch between Gagangeer and Sonamarg during the winter months every year.
There is no word about the re-opening of the road stretch beyond Sonamarg into the Ladakh region. The road has been closed in December due to accumulation of about twenty to thirty feet of snow at several places, including Zojila pass.
