SRINAGAR: Condemning the arrest spree and continuous house arrest of resistance leaders, Hurriyat Conference (G) on Friday termed it as “extreme type of terrorism”.
“This is martial law like situation. Since PDP-led coalition took charge, authorities are not allowing us to carry out political activities. Chairman Syed Ali Geelani has been under continuous house detention since last several years,” the statement said.
“Soon as notification about parliamentary elections were announced, authorities placed Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai, Shabir Ahmad Shah, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, Mohammad Ashraf Laya, Mohammad Altaf Shah, Raja Meraj-u-Din and Ayaz Akbar under house arrest while as Mohammad Yasin Malik was shifted to Central Jail, Srinagar and Syed Imtiyaz Hyder and Omer Adil Dar are lodged in police stations,” the statement added.
Hurriyat said that authorities have “virtually created a martial law like situation”. “Instead of facing resistance camp on political platform, the ruling coalition is terrorising and harassing us,” he said.
Commenting over by-elections, Hurriyat said, “It’s not a democratic process but a drama enacted by forces and state police. These elections have lost credibility.”
