Handwara: Scores of people in Naghama Handwara in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district on Sunday staged a protest while shopkeepers downed their shutters after men in uniform thrashed several civilians without any reason. Local people of the area said that Gulam Mohammad Shah, a private sumo driver of Naghama texi stand was thrashed by army men at Naghama market after they entered into a verbal brawl over some issue. . While Shah was being beaten up, a local shopkeeper Abid Ahmad tried to save him but the furious soldiers thrashed him also. Locals said was hospitalised for some time. Soon after the incident, a large number of people including shopkeepers and transporters staged protest on Baramulla-Kupwara highway against the soldiers involved in the act. Later, a team of local police reached the spot and assured the protesting people to take up the matter with the army. There was no word from the army over the incident.
