Teachers relieved of election, census duties

JAMMU: The government on Friday announced that teachers will no longer have to perform non-teaching jobs like elections and census or other “off-beat responsibilities” within the education department.
The announcement, which will come as a breather for more than one lakh teachers, was made by education minister Altaf Bukhari who said the move will minimise the interruption of academic activities.
“We want to provide teachers congenial atmosphere and minimise disruption of academic activities. After brainstorming and thorough deliberations it has been felt that the teachers should be allowed to concentrate on primary goal of imparting education and for that they should be relieved of all other duties,” Bukbhari told a press conference.
Bukhari said post this move teachers will have enough time to compensate the loss of studies due to “certain situations”, like last year’s uprising.
He said the objective of these “reforms” is to reinforce a sense of accountability and ownership of the schools among the teaching fraternity.
“To begin with, about 80% teachers deployed for election duties have been exempted for the by polls being held in Kashmir,” he said.
Bukhari said the decision would be conveyed to the Divisional Commissioner of Jammu as well to end the practice here also.
