SONAMARG: The snow clearance operation on 10 km Gagangeer-Sonamrag stretch of Srinagar-Leh highway has reached Sonamarg and the road is now expected to ready for traffic soon.
Officials said that the snow clearance operation was started by Beacon in the first week of March from Gagangeer and the road is expected to be thrown open for vehicular traffic by last week of March. BRO Captin Neeraj Kumar told Kashmir Reader that the seven snow- clearance machines are working currently to clear the road. “We have cleared the snow for one-way traffic upto Sonamarg while passes will be cleared for two-way traffic till last of this week if weather remained favorable,” Kumar said. He added that road opening decision would be taken by the civil administration later. Tehsildar Gund, Firdous ul Qadri told Kashmir Reader that a decision on opening of Sonamarg road would be taken only after proper assessment.
The road to Sonamarg remains closed for four to five months in winter due to heavy accumulation of snow. The road was closed for vehicular movement in December no vehicle is allowed to move beyond Gagangeer.
