Lar: The land owners of Lar and its adjoining area whose land comes under a proposed ring road staged protest at Manigam bypass on Srinagar-Leh highway on Sunday.
Denying the measurement of agricultural land proposed by authorities for ring road project in the area, the residents raised objections against survey team on job in the area.
The protesters said justice be done to them and the project be shut as the under survey land is the “only livelihood for many people in the area”.
“Authorities are putting people at alienation through such move. Despite the availability of wetland in the area, government is targeting the residential areas and forcing us to become homeless,” they said.
As per the survey, at least 80 residential houses and several orchards have been identified for construction of the road.
“Construction of the ring road on wetland will be in everyone’s interest. We cannot afford to lose our horticulture land which is our only means of livelihood. We also can’t afford to construct new houses. It is strange that authorities are yet to pay the full compensation against local land acquired for previously constructed 80ft wide Srinagar-Gumri road in 2013 and are now going to further snatch our land,” they said.
Later, Tehsildar, Lar and police reached the spot and pacified the protesters by assuring them that the matter will be looked into.
