Seeks copy of departmental enquiry
SRINAGAR: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Friday directed Power Development Department (PDD) to pay Rs one lakh as compensation to the wife of labourer who was electrocuted to death due to the department’s negligence on Sunday.
The directions by the chairperson of the Commission Justice (retd) Bilal Nazki followed perusal of a report filed by Hilal Ahmad, Executive Engineer of PDD, on behalf Chief Engineer M & RE Kashmir.
He said the department was ready to pay one lakh rupees as interim relief as directed by the Commission to the family of deceased labourer—Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat—who is survived by widow and three children.
However, Hilal said that a clarification was needed as to whether the amount could be given to any specific member of the labourer’s family or his legal heirs. “I direct the amount of Rs. 01 lakh be paid to deceased s wife,” the chairperson said.
The report by the Chief Engineer also revealed that a police case has been filed and departmental enquiry also initiated. “The Commission hopes that the departmental enquiry will be concluded as early as possible,” the chairperson said and directed PDD to submit a copy of the report of enquiry as soon as it was available. The SHRC had taken suo-moto cognizance of the death of the labourer in Srinagar on Sunday and directed the Chief Engineer PDD to file a detailed report regarding the incident. The case has been posted for further consideration April 3.
