Srinagar: After much wait, nine-kilometer Chenani-Nashri tunnel would be thrown open for traffic this month.
Sources in security establishment confirmed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would be travelling to Jammu region to inaugurate the “tunnel of hope”. However, the date for his travel has not been finalised yet, an official said.
The tunnel according to officials would not only reduce the distance by about 40km but would ensure seamless connectivity between Srinagar and Jammu. The Srinagar-Jammu highway often remains cut off due to landslides triggered by snow and rains.
The work on the 9 km tunnel began in 2011and was expected to be completed by August 2016. However, it missed the deadline.
