Bandipora: A Hizbul Mujahideen militant identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Sher Gojri, resident of Malangam area in Bandipora, was killed and an army Major injured in a brief shootout at Bandipora on Thursday, police said.
A police official told reporters that on specific inputs of militant movement in the area, army and police troops were intercepting vehicles near Bandipora police station. “When a driver of a Tata Sumo, which was moving towards Sopore with passengers on board, was asked to stop, a militant travelling in the vehicle immediately opened fire upon the search party. In retaliatory fire, the militant was killed in a brief encounter,” the police said, adding, “Major Johnny of 14RR, which was involved in the operation, received bullet injuries in his thigh.”
One pistol and a grenade was recovered from his possession, a police spokesman said.
