Srinagar: Playing the role of good neighbour led to a macabre consequence for an old man in Nowpora when his four-year-old granddaughter was abducted from home and her throat was slit by the very neighbour he was trying to help. Fortunately, the child survived the vicious attack after doctors at a Rainawari hospital stitched up her throat.
Mohd Yousuf Badyari, the grandfather of the child, said that on February 7, his four-year-old granddaughter Sumaira was abducted from her home by Muzaffar Ahmed Guroo, his neighbour in Abi Nowpora area, who slit her throat in anger against interference in his family matters.
“On the night of 6th February, Muzaffar Ahmed Guroo was quarreling with his family members and the quarrel went on till late in the morning. I went to their house to counsel the family members and I told his mother and sister to come to our house to talk about the situation. They were having tea at our home when the accused came and took my granddaughter forcibly to his house, where he slit her throat,” Mohammad Yousuf Badyari told Kashmir Reader.
He said the child was admitted to a hospital in Rainawari where doctors closed her wound by stitching up her throat. Sumaira is a nursery student at SE High School. The school opened on March 1 after the winter vacations but Sumaira is still not going to school.
“The kid is in a state of shock and fear,” said her father Bilal Ahmed Badyari, a driver by profession. “She doesn’t move out of home now. She stays indoors all the time. She even doesn’t go from one room to another. She will come out of her room only when family members are around.”
Police have started an investigation under FIR no.11/17 Section 307 (attempt to murder), 452,341 of RPC dated 7/02/2017 lodged at Nehru Park police station. The accused is in police remand at Nehru Park police station. The accused is trying to get bail but has not succeeded so far.
A police officer said on the case, “We are investigating the matter and by now it seems a crime done for vengeance. That is the only information I can share for now.”
The City Magistrate at Bemina recorded the statement of the girl and of her grandfather under Section 164-A wherein the child told the magistrate of what she suffered at the hands of her neighbour.
