SRINAGAR: Chairman Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Geelani on Sunday presided over the executive body meeting of the Tehreek-e-Huriyat, his own party and a constituent of the conglomerate he heads, at his Hyderpora residence.
As per a statement issued here, all the executive members participated and unanimously a resolution was adopted and an amendment passed. “The tenure for chairman and executive council was extended for one year,” it said.
The statement said keeping in view the consultative and democratic set-up, the elections of executive council and office bearers are held after every three years and as per schedule, the elections were scheduled on August 2016. “However, these were deferred due to unavoidable circumstances and people’s uprising.”
“To facilitate the smooth functioning of the organisation, a resolution was moved by general secretary Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai in which it was suggested to extend the tenure of chairman and its executive body. The move was supported by all members and later on amendment in this regard was permitted,” it said.
“In a unanimous voice, all members requested Syed Ali Geelani and the executive council to continue and lead the party,” the statement added. Geelani in his presidential address said that Tehreek-e-Huriyat is “not a mere organisation but a movement and a revolution”. ‘We are striving against Indian occupation, unification among Muslims and the adoration of Islam,” he said.
Geelani said the social, political, and religious aspects of Tehreek-e Huriyat are “unique” and since its inception has presented unparalleled sacrifices. “Our party activists during detentions are exhibiting exemplary persistence in jails and interrogation centres,” he said.
