Srinagar: In a setback to football activities in Jammu and Kashmir, several government departments have disallowed their teams to participate in the State Football Championship which started in Jammu on Saturday.
President District Football Association (DFA) Srinagar, Fayaz Sofi said that J&K Bank, Forest, AG’s Office and Food Supplies departments haven’t spared their football teams to participate in the Championship.
“State Championship is played once in a year and all the 22 district teams besides government department teams and local clubs participate in the event. This year only J&K Police and State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) has allowed its teams to allow while the rest of the four departments have told us that there teams won’t participate,” he said in a statement.
While criticizing the decision, Sofi said, “While State government often claims that development of sports is on its top priorities, the facts belie the claims. Last year J&K Bank football team had lifted the Championship. I am at loss to understand what prompted the managements of the government department teams to stop their teams from participating in the event.”
The Jammu and Kashmir Football Association is organizing 25th Edition of State Football Championship and this is the Silver Jubilee Edition of the prestigious event. “The decision of the government teams to pull out of the event at the last moment has put us at great inconvenience as now several teams will get walk overs. Initially, the officials of these government teams had confirmed their participation and we had made the fixture accordingly. However, at the last moment, they say their managements have asked them not to send their teams for the tournament without assigning any reasons,” he claimed.
