Srinagar: On the 26th anniversary of Kunan Poshpora mass rape and torture on 23rd February 2017, which is also commemorated as ‘Women’s Resistance Day’, the ‘Support Group for Justice for Kunan Poshpora’ and the survivors of mass rape and torture organized a small interaction with few members of the press following the state authorities ban on the same event and press conference scheduled at Hotel Lala Rukh, Lal Chowk Srinagar, a statement of the group said on Friday.
As per the statement the survivors of the mass rape and torture had come all the way from Kunan Poshpora to address members of the press and society on the legal case and also to commemorate the memory and struggle of the seven survivors from the twin villages who have died during the last twenty six years of struggle. The most recent death, which occurred in 2016, was of a rape survivor.
A women’s interactive session was organized in offices of Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS) in the theme of ‘Militarisation and Me’, where a group of young women talked about their experiences of growing up in the militarised state of Jammu and Kashmir, the statement said.
The two events were organized to commemorate the struggle of Kashmiri women on Kashmiri Women’s Resistance Day. The Support Group for Justice for Kunan Poshpora received expressions of solidarity from across the world and we extend our appreciation to all those who continue to remember and resist sexual violence in Kashmir.
