SRINAGAR: One of the worst crimes committed by government troops in Kashmir, the mass rape of more than 40 women in Kunan-Poshpora villages of Kupwara in 1991, is the subject of a rap video uploaded on Youtube on Wednesday by a young resident of Ganderbal, Bhat Rihaan. The 2.48-minute video titled ‘Kunan-Poshpora’ has had more than 3,000 views in the past 24 hours.
Rihan, a rapper by passion, has mocked the judicial system for not punishing the accused. He has also praised the resilience of the survivors and conveyed the pain they have gone through.
“I rap for Kashmir because my childhood was caged by fear of bullets and explosives. My rap describes the resistance of my people,” Rihaan told Kashmir Reader.
Rihan, 22, has made rap songs since he was 14. In the past eight years, he has uploaded eight of his rap songs on various websites, including Youtube, one of which had more than 70,000 views.
He starts the rap on Kunan-Poshpora with “Aazab ka manzar hai Kashmir mein, Baha hai khoon hamara Jhelum mein, bardasht ke had hum se poochhte ho, Dekha jo haal hum ne Kunan Poshpora mein (Kashmir is a spectacle of agaony, Our blood has flowed in the Jhelum, You ask us the limits of patience, We have seen the condition in Kunan-Poshpora).”
He takes the listener through the incident, moves to the struggle of its survivors, and concludes with the faith that even if there remains no hope of justice in this world, Allah will deliver justice.
Rihaan, who has studied computers, has kept photos of the survivors of Kunan-Poshpora in the background of his video.
