SRINAGAR: A court here will record statement of accused Imam (prayer leader), arrested in 2013 for murdering a man on the pretext of performing a ritual after developing “illicit relation” with his wife.
Besides the imam—Mohammad Amin Naik, the Principal Session’s Judge Srinagar will also record the statement of victim’s wife under 342 CrPC (recording of statement by accused) on next date of hearing on March 2. Both the accused were produced on Tuesday before the court where their bail plea was also partly argued by the counsel representing them.
Naik and the woman was arrested by police few days after the body of the victim, Shahnawaz Ahmad Dar, a resident of Chewa village of Budgam, was fished out from river Jhelum on 3 October 2013, four days after he went missing from the house of his in-laws at Qamarwari locality of the city shortly after going for night prayers.
The ID-card of Naik, a resident of Kulgam district and an imam at a mosque in Qamarwari, was recovered from the pheran (winter cloak) Dar was wearing. Naik was put to sustained questioning and confessed that he had “illicit relation” with the wife of the deceased and subsequently planned Dar’s murder, police had said.
