Kupwara: Two women reportedly died on Friday in Keran area of northern Kashmir’s Kupwara district, as they could not be moved to a hospital due to the blockade of Keran-Kupwara road.
According to the families of the deceased, the two elderly women died for want of medical care, that was not available in Keran.
“If my wife could have reached Kupwara hospital, she could have survived, but due to the road closure they could not be moved,” said Nadir Joo whose wife was one of the two dead.
The families lamented that the government was aware about the topography and the problems that arise in winter, “but they never pay attention to this area”.
According to reports Kupwara-Keran road is blocked for the 25th consecutive day and the authorities have made little efforts to restore the road.
Keran has more than 4000 population and according to the residents the government authorities have ignored this valley, and there are no government officials present there.
Alleging that the Beacon machines are lying defunct, the residents said the authorities are ignoring the population perpetually. “We have been left to face hardships due to the closure of Keran-Kupwara road,” a resident said.
The added that despite promises by the authorities the Keran road has not been cleared after several weeks.
Deputy Commissioner Kupwara, Gh Mohammad Dar said that the administration was closely monitoring the situation and providing “all possible help to the people of far flung areas”.
