Jammu: PDP legislator Javed Mustafa Mir on Saturday said that India has not fulfilled its promise of conducting a plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir and the situation would not change till Kashmir issue stays unresolved.
“If you have made promises with people of the state then why don’t you fulfil them? If you don’t fulfill the promises then you can’t question youth for picking up stones in their hands,’’ Mir said.
“If demanding of plebiscite is unconstitutional then former Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had also demanded it,” he said.
Speaking on the discussion over the grants of Home department, he said the state has acceded with India on the basis on certain promises and conditions which the government of India failed to fulfil.
“We have not merged with India but are living under certain conditions,” he added.
Mir questioned the Indian government for “feeding people of Kashmir with poison” while wanting them to live with the country.
He said India should not expect peace unless it does justice with all the three regions of state.
“Economic package are not a solution for Kashmir issue, even if India announces and allocate economic package of the entire country to Kashmir, still they [India] can’t solve the Kashmir issue. The need of hour is to honour the promises you made with the people of state,’’ he said.
He said the chief minister has a limited role in resolving Kashmir issue and the government of India has a bigger role in bringing normalcy to Kashmir.
“We can’t blame any chief minister for unrest in Kashmir. Omar Abdullah was not responsible for 2010 and Mehbooba jee is not responsible for 2016 unrest. Unrest occurs because of lingering Kashmir issue and India has sown seeds for it in the state,’’ Mir said.
Earlier, he strongly reacted and confronted independent legislator from Udhampur Pawan Gupta, who demanded that plebiscite remarks by independent MLA Engineer Rasheed should be expunged from the assembly records.
