Jammu: Chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said as many as 2403 persons have been arrested since 2007 under the provisions of the much-criticised Public Safety Act, in which a person can be detained for up to one year without a trial.
Detention of 1392 of the PSA detainees had been quashed, she said while replying to the question of BJP MLA Ranbir Singh Pathani.
She said there can be a variety of reason, including technical grounds for quashment of detention orders, depending on merits or facts and circumstances of each individual case as well as the relevant statutory provisions.
She said that in a number of cases the government disapproves of detention orders passed by the district magistrates if they are not in conformity with the provisions of relevant laws.
To another question about “offences against state” committed since July 2016 till now in the entire state, she said, “35 cases relating to offences against have been registered in the state since July till December 2016.”
She further stated that all supervisory officers are monitoring the investigation of criminal cases in their areas of responsibility and maintaining records as per the JK Police Manual.
