Family ‘not keen’, Mufti’s name dropped from Padma list: Report

Srinagar: The BJP-led government is believed to have dropped former late Chief Minster Mufti Mohammad Sayeed from the list of Padma awardees whose names were announced on India’s Republic Day, Indian Express reported.
The newspaper, quoting sources, reported that among the 89 awardees, PDP patron Mufti’s name was dropped from the list at the last minute after his family indicated they were “not very keen”.
Mufti passed away on 7 January 2016, a year after he formed a coalition with the BJP in Jammu and Kashmir.
“Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to several awardees before their names were finalised and the list made public,” the report said.
A PDP leader also confirmed that there was a move to include Mufti in the Padma list.
“His name was being considered along with names of Sundar Lal Patwa, former Chief Minister of undivided Madhya Pradesh, who passed away in December 2016, and PA Sangma, former Lok Sabha Speaker,” Express reported.
