Srinagar: At least six army personnel were killed after two avalanches hit an army post in north Kashmir’s Gurez sector, sources said on Thursday.
The army camp of 51 RR in Gurez sector was hit by the avalanches after which rescue operations were underway, they said.
“An avalanche struck an army camp in Gurez sector. Rescue operations were launched immediately in extreme bad weather and heavy snowfall. The search operation enabled the rescue of one JCO and six soldiers while bodies of three soldiers could only be retrieved,” an army statement said.
The statement added “in another avalanche in the same area, one army patrol moving towards the post went missing. The area continues to receive heavy snowfall. Braving inhospitable weather conditions, coordinated rescue operations are in progress in which three bodies could be recovered so far.”
Army statement said that both the said mishaps took place yesterday.
