Kupwara: Faulty drainage in Kupwara has led to heavy water logging at many places in Kupwara leaving main roads and footpaths submerged.
Residents say the tall promises made by the Kupwara Municipal Committee (KMC) of ensuring immediate draining of rain water have fallen flat. The town witnessed heavy snowfall this month, the municipal committee has miserably failed to tackle the problem of water logging. Streets in areas like Malik-Mohalla, Darzipora, Iqbal Market and Dar-Gali are still submerged with water at many places along with some link roads.
The water logging results in traffic jams at many places giving a tough time to motorists and pedestrians. A Senior citizen, Mohammad Ramzan Wani of Kupwara, said that due to the “inefficient and improper drainage system”, even a light rainfall results in water logging.
“It is obvious that drainage is not capable of carrying rain water. Most of drains are chocked which results in overflow of water after a mild rain,” Ramzan Said.
The government’s claims of having spent crores of rupees over the years on different drainage projects in the town fail to show any results on the ground, residents said.
An official of the KMC told Kashmir Reader that water logging was caused by various governmental construction activities going on in the town.
