Kupwara: In a major crackdown against drug abuse and sale of psychotropic substances in Kupwara district, police Sunday arrested eight drug peddlers and recovered narcotic substances worth corers of rupees.
Narcotic substances were smuggled from across the Line of Control (LoC) and sent to different parts of the country, police said.
Addressing reporters, Shamsher Hussian, SP Kupwara said that brown sugar and heroin, one kilogram each and around 400 grams of charas, were recovered from the possession of the accused. “Three drug peddlers arrested from border town Karnah of the district used to acquire narcotic substances from LoC and sell it in different parts of the country. The narcotic substances have a value of crores of rupees in the international market,” said SP Hussian.
The accused have been identified as Nisar Ahmad Chokar, Mohammad Khaleeq Sheikh and Rayees Ahmad Sheikh, all residents of Karnah. “Some more arrests are likely and separate police teams have been constituted to nab the culprits,” Hussain added.
According to him, three other drug peddlers Mohammad Shabir Mir, Sadiq Ahmad Mir and Abdul Rashid Mir were arrested from three different villages of Kupwara on Sunday. Around 400 grams of charas were recovered from their possession. Police had recovered around 3 Kg charas and one Kg Fukki and seven army CSD canteen cards from two drug peddlers in Kupwara last week.
