Srinagar: Heavy snowfall accompanied by rain is forecast in the Valley during 23-26 January. The Srinagar-Jammu highway is likely to be closed during these days.
The Metrological Department on Saturday issued a fresh warning of moderate to heavy snowfall in upper and plain regions of Kashmir in the coming days. Kashmir valley is likely to receive moderate rainfall in plains and heavy snowfall in upper regions during 23-26 January, the Met department said.
“There is forecast of light rain in the plains on 22nd of January and from 23rd there are many chances of rain and fairly widespread snowfall till 26th January,” said Director, Metrological Department Kashmir, Sonam Lotus.
There are possibilities of landslides in many places in the higher regions, Lotus said. Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar highway is likely to be stopped in the event of snowfall, he said.
Officials of traffic police said that they were ready to tackle the bad weather and there was no need to worry. But Sonum Lotus told Reader, “There are high chances of closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway in the wake of heavy snowfall.”
Another Met department official here said, “The heavy to moderate snowfall in the upper region could lead to the closure of Srinagar-Jammu national highway.”
Meanwhile, the Divisional Commissioner Kashmir issued weather advisory and directed all deputy commissioners to take immediate precautionary measures for security and safety of general public.
“An avalanche warning has been issued and people have been asked to remain away from avalanche-prone areas on January 23-26, during which heavy snowfall and rain is expected,” said an official spokesman at the divisional commissioner’s office.
