SRINAGAR: Reacting against the reports that NIA will scrutinise the bank accounts of its chairman, Syed Ali Geelani, the Hurriyat Conference (G) on Friday termed it a “ploy to cow down his (Geelani’s) sprit, harass, and deter him from raising the voice of suppressed and subjugated nation”.
In a statement issued here, the amalgam said, “The reported move (by NIA) is part of a negative campaign (against Geelani). Nothing is concealed and his activities are open, transparent, and unambiguous. The two accounts belonging to Geelani Sahib are functional since year 2014 and were activated after floods. Even people were called to deposit in these accounts for rehabilitation and to assist those affected by the deluge.”
Huriyat said the account numbers were made public and all records regarding the income and expenditure are on record in the bank. “The Tehreek-e-Huriyat, a constituent party of the conglomerate, is collecting donations throughout the year and particularly in the month of Ramadan. People contribute and donate generously. The agencies like NIA are being used as a tool to harass the pro-freedom leadership. However, it won’t help them but will prove a futile exercise for those at the helm of affairs,” it said.
