SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference chairman Syed Ali Geelani would be awarded an honorary doctorate by Mirpur University of Science and Technology in Pakistan administered Kashmir.
According to The Express Tribune newspaper, the recognition would an acknowledgement for “his lifelong services to people in Kashmir.”
“The Azad Jammu & Kashmir President and MUST Chancellor Sardar Muhammad Masood Khan will confer the honorary degree of doctorate upon Syed Ali Geelani at the second convocation of university being held at the local campus on January 16,” the varsity’s VC Dr Habibur Rehman was quoted as having said at a presser.
Rehman said an invite has been extended to Geelani but restrictions imposed by the Indian government on his travel would prevent him from attending the convocation.
The octogenarian leader’s representative in Pakistan administered Kashmir, Ghulam Muhammad Safi, would receive the degree on his behalf.
