Anantnag: Police on Friday arrested Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader in south Kashmir’s Anantnag on Friday who was evading arrest for the past more than six months.
Ashiq Hussain Narchoor, who is the tehsil president of TeH led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani was declared a proclaimed offender by the police. Sources said he was instrumental in organizing and running a free medical camp in district hospital Anantnag for the injured persons during the uprising that triggered off after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani.
Police in civvies arrested him while he was coming out from the Baitul Muqaram mosque at General Bus Stand Islamabad after offering Friday prayers. “He was evading arrest since last six months and is likely to be booked under PSA”, sources said.
“He provided all sorts of assistance to the pellet and bullet victims and the families of martyrs during the months of uprising,” said one of his close associates.
Earlier, Narchoor has served continuous detention for six years from 2004 to 2010 and intermittently afterwards for his political activities. Aged 34 and coming from a humble background, Unmarried Narchoor has his brother and mother in his family.
