Hajin: The residents of Hajin town of district Bandipora are up in arms against the authorities for their “failure to maintain the river embankments in the area”.
The aggrieved residents told Kashmir reader that a large portion of the River Jhelum collapsed last year but till date the authorities failed to initiate the repairs.
The locals said that the work on said project was started but it was left unattended after few months of work.
Talking to Kashmir Reader Mohammad Riyaz, a local resident said that the unattended river bank is causing a threat to the local population. “The water level is very low in the river, otherwise the river bank would give nightmares to the people,” he said.
The embankment sank 12 times since 2010 but it has only been temporarily restored with heaping soil and rocks on it. It requires proper management,” he said.
Locals alleged that the local legislators from the ruling and opposition parties have completely ignored the area. “Most roads in Hajin are damaged or at the verge of collapse but authorities are acting as mute spectators putting the public lives in danger,” they said.
Sub-divisional magistrate Sumbal Ghulam Mohammad said that he would look into the embankment issue. “I will personally visit the spot and also bring into the notice of Executive Engineer irrigation and flood control,” he said.
