Srinagar: A police constable died in north Kashmir’s Handwara area on Saturday when suspected militants opened fire on a naka party at Chogal village late in the evening.
Sources said that a police party had laid naka in the evening following reports on suspected movements in the area. A load carrier passed through the barricade and the policemen asked the driver to stop. However, instead of paying heed to police party, suspected militants who were traveling in the vehicle opened fire. The bullets hit a police constable who fell on the ground. He was immediately shifted to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The police constable was identified as Abdul Karim (belt number 22H), a resident of Mawar village in Handwara.
Police and the government forces immediately cordoned off the area to track down the militants involved in the incident. However, no arrests were made till last reports came in.
