Srinagar: “He was hit with bullets by government forces on Eid,” said one of the four cousins of 12-year-old Yasir Ahmed Bhat at SMHS hospital where the boy lay flat on a bed with bandage over his private parts.
Unable to wear trousers because his private parts are bandaged, Yasir was hit by two bullets in Magam Chowk of Handwara district on the day of Eid-ul-Azha. “One bullet pierced his private parts. His one testicle has been removed and one bullet taken out. The other bullet is still inside,” said the doctor who is treating him at SMHS.
Yasir said he was not part of any protest. “I had lunch with my family at 12:30pm. Then my father told me to go to my uncle’s home located just 20 meters from our house at Magam, Handwara.” He withered in pain as he spoke. He asked his cousins to give him some juice. After taking two sips, he spoke again, “I had to assist my uncle in Qurbani meat distribution. I with my Didi (elder sister) left home at about 12:45pm.”
Upon reaching Magam Chowk in Handwara, Yasir said he saw a huge deployment of government forces. “I tried to retrace my steps. A policeman aimed his gun towards me. I instantly fell down. All I could remember after that are the wails of my Didi. I don’t know how I came here in the hospital,” said Yasir.
When SSP Handwara was contacted for information about this case, he said he had received “no such reports”.
One of Yasir’s cousins said that a doctor had told him that Yasir’s reproductive health will be affected.
