SRINAGAR: Handwara youth Musaib Majeed Nagoo alias Asif, who succumbed to a head injury on Monday evening at SKIMS, was buried on Tuesday morning at his native village here in Sonawani village of Qaziabad Handwara in Kupwara district. Reports said that thousands of people from Sonawani, Langate, Wadora, Ceelo, Bomay and other areas of Qaziabad reached Sonawani village to offer funeral prayers for the deceased. Musaib Majeed received serious head injuries on Sunday in clashes with government forces in the village.
Police have said that Musaib’s head injury was due to stones hurled by villagers, but people of the area said that Musaib first received pellet injuries and then he was beaten by troops, so badly that he passed into a coma and was on ventilator till he died.
Villagers said that soon after the burial, people held anti-India protests and once again clashed with deployed troops of army, CRPF and police outside the village. People hurled stones and bricks at the troops and came under teargas shelling and pellet firing by the troops. The troops also, witnesses said, broke windowpanes of several houses and damaged other private property. About a dozen people have been injured in Tuesday’s clashes. Some troops have also sustained injuries. The injured people were treated at nearby health centers.
Reports said that many people who could not attend the funeral prayers of Musaib, offered special prayers at their respective areas and held several rallies in protest against his killing.
Sonawani is a small village in Qaziabad Handwara in Kupwara district that is also close to Wadora village of Sopore in Baramulla district.
