Geelani calls Khan ‘atrocious’

SRINAGAR: Chairman Hurriyat conference (G), Syed Ali Geelani, on Saturday called the station house officer (SHO), Bijbehara, Arshid Khan, “atrocious” and said that he has “unleashed a reign of terror on people”.
Speaking to media before he was arrested outside his office-cum-residence for trying to lead the ‘Lal Chowk Chalo’ march, he said the people in south Kashmir have conveyed to him that Khan has been “brutal” in dealing with protesters, especially youth.
“People of south Kashmir have informed us that SHO Arshid Khan has been perpetrating atrocities on people,” Geelani said.
The octogenarian leader, who continues to be under house detention, said, “History will remember Kashmir as a place where policemen, who are a part of the society, perpetrate violence against their own people for demanding their rights.”
Khan is the second police official named publically by Geelani.
Earlier, the pro-freedom leader called SHO Khanabal, Anantnag, Touseef Ahmad Mir, a “butcher” and a “criminal”. Mir was also accused of committing atrocities on the protesting civilians.
It is for the first time that the veteran pro-freedom leader is publicly naming the police officers involved in using force at the protesters. And it is evoking response from the public.
The statement against Yasir Qadri, murder-accused deputy superintended of police, prompted unidentified persons to inscribe graffiti, calling him a “murderer”, outside his Srinagar residence.
Similarly, a threatening poster was spotted outside the residence of Mir, whose family later sought to meet Geelani to apologise for their son’s actions.
