The Daily Farce: ‘Situation under control’

Srinagar: As it does every evening, the police releases to the press a statement which opens with the same hackneyed phrase, “The situation throughout the Valley remained normal and under control today.” Then it goes on to list “some minor stone pelting incidents” and then, in increasing tempo, the number of the injured, incidents of fiercer violence, announcements of curfew. It does not occur to the police that the second part of its statement contradicts the first.
On Friday, for instance, the press statement began with: “The situation throughout Kashmir remained under control”. In the very next sentence it says, “There were about 70 incidents of stone pelting across the valley.” This is just the start. After this the statement says: “Miscreants attacked a number of police and security establishments and camps.”
The situation under control keeps getting worse. “Militants lobbed a grenade on the police and CRPF personnel deployed for law and order duty at Shopian. Grenade was later on defused by the BD squad. At Rohama, Rafiabad, a government building was set on fire. The deployments exercised maximum restraint in spite of such serious provocations.”
Calmly, the statement informs, “During these law and order situations 8 persons, 46 police and security force personnel were injured.” (8 persons injured? When the SMHS hospital alone admitted more than 40 injured, 20 of them with pellet injuries. Brazen lies are another highlight of the police statements.
Finally, the farce ends with another stale sentence: “As a precautionary measure Curfew/restrictions were put in place in the sensitive towns and areas to maintain law and order.”
