Srinagar: Four militants and a soldier died in a gun-battle in Tangdhar area of Kupwara district on Thursday morning, officials said.
The encounter took place a day after two militants and a soldier were killed in a prolonged encounter in Katwara forests of Macchil sector in the same district.
The search operations continued in both areas as the Indian troops suspected presence of more militants.
Since these areas are out-of-bounds for civilians and independent verification of events is difficult, police and army are the only sources of information on the gunfights and operations in these areas.
Officials said that troops of 1/3 GR regiment intercepted a group of militants who were entering into Kashmir from Pakistan administered Kashmir on early Thursday morning at Tikri post in Tangdhar.
The gunfight continued for several hours, resulting in the death of four militants. The army said that a soldier injured in the gunfight was immediately evacuated to hospital where he succumbed to injuries.
