SRINAGAR: Nehru Park, Srinagar is all set to get a Water Sports Center which will be managed by Sports Authority of India, a statement from J&K State Sports Council said Saturday.
The development came during a meeting of SAI and J&K SSC officials, the statement added.
The meeting was attended by Director, SAI, Regional Centre, Chandigarh, Secretary, J&K State Sports Council Deputy Director, SAI, Sports Officer (K), Sports Council Srinagar, In-charge STC Jammu/Srinagar and Section Officer, Activity Section.
The center will be a day boarding unit where at least 20 trainees will be given training and coaching. They will be also give stipend and equipment by the SAI, the first of its kind gesture in J&K.
It was also decided that extension centre of Srinagar will be converted into full fledged SAI training centre on the pattern of SAI training centre at Gindun Multi Sports Centre, Rajbagh, Srinagar.
The selection trials for the enrolment of trainees in the STC Jammu/Srinagar will be conducted in Fencing, Kayaking and Canoeing and Taekwondo disciplines for which services of coaches shall be provided by the Sports Council.
The SAI authorities, according to the statement, will consider recruitment of local qualified Coaches for training centers at Jammu/Srinagar and Kargil on contract basis.
Possibility of opening of SAI Sub Regional Centre at Srinagar and establishment of academics and sports hostels was also discussed. The Sports Authority of India also assured that norms for admission in Diploma Courses for the candidates of J&K shall be considered, the statement added.
