FROM THE HO– USE: Only Jammu’s Safai Karamcharis insured

SRINAGAR: Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) doesn’t have a health or accident insurance policy for its Safai Karamcharis while its Jammu counterpart already has its crucial workforce covered.
The Safai Karamcharis of Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) are covered under Life Insurance Corporation’s Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana (AABY) that provides compensation to the workers in case of death or injury.
The information was shared by deputy chief minister, Nirmal Singh, in the State Legislative Assembly on Friday. He was responding to questions from Member of Legislative Council S Charanjit Singh.
As per the government, a permanent Safai Karamchari in Jammu is provided an amount of Rs 75, 000 in case he dies or faces total disability due to loss of two eyes or two limbs in an accident at work.
If a worker loses one eye or one limb and faces partial disability, he is given a compensation of Rs 37,500, he said.
In addition, ex-gratia relief to the tune of Rs 10,000 is also provided to the nominee of the deceased out of municipal resources.
However, SMC doesn’t have any such policy. The minister said the SMC is working on a plan with State Life Insurance Corporation to cover all Safai Karamcharis.
For this, he said, a Municipal Welfare Fund has also been raised by way of mutual monthly contribution to provide adequate financial assistance to the victims in case of eventualities.
The state government said Safai Karamcharis were provided with requisite equipments and gadgets such as shoes, gloves, and masks for use during the cleaning of sewers or roads and collection of solid waste.
Instructions are given to the officials from time to time for providing them with the necessary things.
Presently, the total number of persons working as Safai Karamcharis in the two corporations is 4,855. Of them, 2,337 work in JMC while 2,518 are placed in SMC.
In Srinagar, 1,296 and 864 work on a permanent basis in Srinagar and Jammu, respectively.
About the enhancement of wages to Safai Karamcharis, the minister said: “No such proposal to enhance the wages of Safai Karamcharis is under consideration of the government at this point of time.”
