Army occupying 2,710 kanals of Wakf land: Govt

SRINAGAR: The government stated in the upper house of the legislative assembly on Wednesday that the Indian army, state government departments, and civilians have illegally occupied six thousand kanals of Wakf land in the state. The government further said that an amount of Rs 2.19 crore has been realised from the total 96,650 kanals and 13 marlas of Wakf land in the state during the 2015-16 year.
In response to a question, the government told the assembly that the army has occupied 2,710 kanals and 16 marlas of Wakf land, state government departments have occupied 896 kanals and 15 marlas, and civilians have occupied 2,390 kanals of Wakf land.
When PDP MLC Zafar Manhas asked what steps have been taken to retrieve the land, the government said that the matter was actively being pursued with all concerned departments to either seek regularisation of the occupied land or ensure its vacation.
“The special officer auqaf has been asked to separately identify the land under unauthorised occupation of army, BSF, CRPF and police, so that the matter can be taken up at appropriate levels for regularisation or vacation,” the government said.
